Our pulpit was installed as part of the major internal renovations to St. Mary’s Church in 1901.
The pulpit is solidly built on a stone base with a spiral staircase. The brass candlesticks would have been essential in 1902, as electricity came late to Newchurch in Pendle.
The stall in front of the pulpit is where the Vicar stands during the service. When he is ready the Vicar climbs the steps to preach his sermon. When he is stood in the pulpit he has a clear view of church, including the pictures of previous vicars that hang on the stairs to the gallery. He says having all those previous incumbents watching him is quite intimidating!
